Being an over-the-road truck driver can often be a lonesome and thankless job. The next time you are about to curse at the 18 wheeler you are following or passing, or that may be passing you, try to remember the tireless work that goes into being a truck driver. The sacrifices professional drivers make between providing for their families and time at home is immeasurable.
We get calls from time to time from citizens complaining about our drivers; some warranted and some not. So imagine how nice it was for us to have received a call on March 17th, 2015 from a Mrs. Martha Best, telling us how lucky we are to have such a great driver on our team. And how lucky one young lady was to have had our driver in the right place at the right time.
On January 17, 2015, 9 year old Carlena Best, her mother and two younger sisters were traveling on an icy I-84 in Nampa, Idaho when their car slid off the roadway and rolled four times. Everyone was shaken and bruised but otherwise fine except for Carlena, who was unconscious.
Carlena’s mother said they were pinned in the car and there was so much commotion she couldn’t even think of how to help her daughter. Paul Transportation driver, Gary Hurd, arrived at the accident scene and saw Carlena being moved and instantly knew to restrain her neck, which held open Carlena’s airways until the paramedics and rescue crew got there. Carlena’s mother, Martha, stated that she believed her daughter may not be here today if it had not been for the heroic efforts of Gary.
For the past five years that Gary has been employed by Paul Transportation, he has proven to be a very reliable and dedicated driver, for which we have always been proud. But the decision Gary made that day to help someone rather than drive on past the accident scene, has little to do with the Paul truck he drives or the Paul training mentor jacket he wears, but rather his actions reflects what lies at the core of Gary Hurd, which is a hardworking and caring man. Lucky for Carlena and her family, this caring man happens to drive an 18 wheeler for a living.
We are fortunate to have Gary as a part of our Paul driving team, as well as many, many more drivers like him. We are very proud of Gary for this heroic deed. For this, we recognize him as a Paul Hero of the Highway!
